The Tool Of God's Word [extra from Vol. 6#3]
•Nicole Becker

I would like to encourage you to memorize God’s Word. If His Words are so special to us, why would we not learn and keep them in our hearts forever? When we really need God’s guidance, will we have a Bible in hand? Or will God direct us by bringing memorized verses to mind? If we internalize Bible verses, it is harder for the devil to sway us from our narrow path. However if we memorize verses, but later forget them because we have neglected to review them, what benefit is that? They will surely not be useful when we need them most. The key to instilling God’s words in our hearts, souls, and minds is to keep reviewing and treasuring them throughout our days.

Sometimes, I memorize just short verses, such as Philippians 4:4, Ephesians 4:32, James 1:19-20, Colossians 3:12,15,17. Ephesians 4:32 has been particularly useful in helping me remember to love, forgive, and truly care for others. Recently I was blessed with the opportunity to encourage an elderly, Christian lady who is struggling. I shared Colossians 3:15a, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts” - with her, telling her how this verse reveals to me that we have a choice to let God’s peace rule in our hearts or not.

So I challenge you to memorize verses and passages that seem to stand out as you read your devotions. My favorite passage is Romans 8:31-39 because it describes God’s amazing love for us; I would strongly encourage you to memorize this passage. If you do not know where to begin, you could also try Colossians 3:1-4 and 12-17, Philippians 4:4-9, James 1:2-8, 1 Corinthians 3:1-4, Psalms 1 and 34. Soak God’s word until becomes a part of you, instead of just words from a book. Find your favorite promises and encouragements and plant them in your heart. You will never regret it!
